What is Coaching?

Coaching is a unique kind of conversation with someone trained to listen deeply, reflect back what they hear without judgment or an agenda, ask questions that spark insight, and help us navigate the internal barriers that hold us back.

 

Coaching is not psychotherapy designed to address acute or traumatic mental health crises (though it often has therapeutic benefits). It is not consulting or mentoring, which tend to focus on giving advice based on expertise or experience. That said, coaching often works beautifully alongside one or more of these disciplines. A coach does not tell you how to live your life or exactly what to do; they're more of a thought partner who draws on your own wisdom.

 

The best coaches in the world do not coach the problem. They coach the person – the whole person. They help shift the client’s relationship to the challenge. They trust the client to be creative, resourceful, and whole. They empower clients to understand, accept, see clearly, move through, or respond skillfully to their challenges in new and creative ways. Learn more here. 

How MIGHT coaching help me?

At its core, coaching helps us live the fullest life possible – whatever that means for each individual. At any given time, we may be facing challenges such as:

 

  • Transitions (professional or personal): navigating major identity shifts such as career changes, moves, changes in physical ability, aging, or dying
     

  • Health: healing from (or coming to terms with) acute, chronic, or terminal illness
     

  • Money & Career: creating financial stability, freedom, and prosperity on our own terms, as well as meaning, purpose, and impact in our work (paid or volunteer)
     

  • Daily Work & Home Life: managing the demands of work, family, and relationships with steadiness and effectiveness
     

  • Relationships: finding and nurturing deep connection; beginning, ending, or reshaping relationships with partners, children, colleagues, or animals; deepening our relationship with ourselves, nature, or a higher power

Coaching helps us get out of our own heads by talking with someone trained to listen deeply and ask powerful questions. These conversations help us see our lives from new perspectives and act in alignment with our deepest values. Often, nothing has observably changed at first – but we begin to see new possibilities. We gain clarity. We feel differently about a situation. From there, better decisions and more aligned action become possible. What once felt scary, hard, or impossible often loosens its grip – or even becomes energizing. As we change internally, our lives begin to change externally. This may be why many first-time clients describe coaching as feeling a bit like “magic.”

WhAT's WITH ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT coaching?

Thirty years ago, coaching was a young and largely misunderstood discipline. Today, it is well established, with rigorous international credentialing and quality standards, as well as a wide range of perspectives drawn from neuroscience and psychology; psychosomatic and contemplative practices; leadership and personal development; and ancient wisdom and spiritual traditions. Coaching is now widely recognized as a powerful way to better understand and lead ourselves and others. It is taught at many of the world’s leading universities, expected of high-performing leaders across industries, and one of the fastest-growing and most sought-after professions.

Lead by Listening

Everyone has heard of Active Listening but very few understand its power. Available in 40, 60, & 90-minute versions, Lead By Listening will equip people leaders with the 3 key behaviors that can most immediately strengthen the trust, clarity and collaboration needed for any high-performing team.

Divergent Thinking & Collaboration

Define > Design > Refine. Cross-functional teams participate in a 2 hour Design Challenge in which intersubjective problem definition gives rise to creative solutions that gain clarity in a storyboarded presentation.

Equity in Action

Participants discover a personalized approach to understanding equity by actively reflecting on its 3 core features: Context, Access, and Agency. Developed in part during Peter's Equity and Inclusion fellowship at Harvard's Graduate School of Education.

Storytelling & Presentation Skills

No matter the context, speaking publicly is an opportunity to connect with an audience in new ways.  Available in 40, 60, 90 minute versions as well as a 2 or 4-hour pre-conference prep session, participants will discover the storytelling skills that will instill confidence and ensure your content is authentic, relatable, memorable and inspiring. Hone the skills to deliver clear, engaging messaging that guide your teams toward specific, actionable steps

Physics of Play

A 1.5 or 3 hour group workshop designed to heighten awareness and liberate creativity. Participants experience a divergent approach to problem solving which celebrates individuality by strengthening the connection to our creative impulses.
